Singaporeans might use odd expressions that we think is standard english, but at least we don’t have trouble understanding a sentence like this, i hope?:
“… The primary cause (of a recent increase in birth rate) lies in the economic recovery in addition to various measures put in place to counter the falling birth rate.”
let’s just say that there was a lack of understanding today in the office i share with another ALT, the main problem being that the above sentence doesnt make sense.

The birth rate is higher because we successfully tried to stop the falling birth rate, and because of the economic recovery.
do away with the brackets and insert a comma after "economic recovery" - should read better? the brackets make the sentence a little funny.
Aren't the brackets there for us to understand the context of a previous (unwritten) sentence though? Take it you know what's being said, read it w/o brackets and it looks perfectly fine to me. =X

i added the brackets actually, cos it might not have made sense without providing the context for the sentence.
but essentially my fellow ALT colleague kept saying that he doesnt understand what the sentence is means because it doesnt make sense to him at all.
