unique belgian chocolate cup

anyone who lives in japan would be familiar with the amount of packaging here. so many things have to be individually wrapped and often have several layers of packaging too. for example, i buy soap in a packet of 3; each piece comes in a plastic wrapping inside a cardboard box, so that’s 3 layers of packaging in all. cookies and chocolate are almost always individually wrapped too, which means a lot of waste is generated.

packaging has been taken to another level however, in the form of the box of chocolates i received for valentine’s. too bad i didnt take pictures of its initial form – i wasnt expecting anything beyond digging into the delicious chocs – but it came wrapped up in shiny brown paper. a pretty ribbon, on which were descriptions of the company’s chocolates, tied it up, and was also stuck to the wrapping paper in several different places with scotchtape, double-sided tape and promotion stickers.

then came the box – a slide-open one securely fastened at both ends with a round sticker each – and when i opened it…..

the chocolate, with its paper cupcake tray in its unique chocolate cup.

oh my.. the chocolates are deliciously smooth and yummy, but the packaging is definitely the unexpected icing on the cake. for all its ludicrousness – or perhaps precisely because of it - you have to admit it’s kinda cute.
