swine flu in japan

for anyone interested, the number of infected people in japan has been steadily rising, standing at 532 cases at last count. the most affected areas are eastern japan – shizuoka, miyagi and chiba prefectures as well as tokyo keep cropping up in tallies – and kyushu.

there are about 20 to 30 new cases occurring daily throughout japan, and the daily yomiuri’s japanese website is probably the most up-to-date with reports. there is no more mention of swine flu on the online, english editions of japanese newspapers though, and i think the general attitude in japan is that things are fine.

it was really interesting how quickly public perception changes: the moment schools in hyogo and osaka were ordered to close for a week, everyone went into a state of panic, masks started flying off the shelves and everyone was wearing a mask. however, the moment the week ended and schools were reopened, it was as if swine flu never happened and all the masks came off. super weird.
