i watched this yesterday with alim, and i have to say i was disappointed!
i suppose part of my disappointment came from thinking that this show was the on-ice version of a Cirque du Soleil act, but i realised – only just now – that the two are unrelated. even then, i’d went thinking that i’ll be able to see lots of skating and acrobatics on ice, but unfortunately this was not the case.
to begin with, the rink was tiny. the skaters didnt have enough space to skate around to gain the speed and momentum needed for the more difficult jumps, spins and turns, so had to make do with plain skating around at low speeds and very simple turns. simply put, the skating there was just very regular stuff.
Reverie is meant to tell a story – read about it here – but the storyline is non-existent and it felt more like a hodgepodge of acrobatic acts. the performers WERE good, undoubtedly, but without a good storyline to hold them together, the plain viewing of those performances got a bit tiresome nearer the end.
there were some memorable parts, such as the “clown”, the lady who performed with the hoops and the rope – she’s amazing and drew the most applause – and the two-man act, where the bigger guy formed the base for the smaller guy to balance on. the act began with the smaller guy doing a 1-arm handstand with his feet splayed apart in a split all on the other (seated) man’s HEAD!
In general, Reverie is simply a glammed-up circus act. dont be fooled by the elegant, mystical description of the show and go only if you’re interested in the acrobatic stuff.
