it occurred to me the other day that there's a possibility this correlation may actually be rather strong..
i can't drive, and i'm in one of the least rural areas you can possibly be. another girl who's in the rural part of akita prefecture (which is a fairly rural prefecture itself) lives about a 45min drive away from one of her schools, if i remember correctly. wendy, one of the ex-JETs, said that you can't not drive in the rural area in winter, due to the heavy snow fall in most parts. besides, it's far more convenient to have a car if you're in a rural area where bus services are fairly infrequent.
it would be interesting to try to find out if all the people who have been posted to rural areas hold a driver's license...
